States reviewing ‘eligibility’ challenges
February 21, 2009
Montana tables plan while Oklahoma’s gets committee approval Campaigners who have brought dozens of lawsuits challenging President Obama’s eligibility to occupy the Oval Office under constitutional requirements he be a “natural born” citizen continue chasing those cases through arguments over discovery and hearing schedules, but now they also have turned their attention to state legislatures, which could require their states to verify such information about candidates. At least three propo

The consequences of the 2009 vote
February 21, 2009
You cannot have an election and win or lose it and not suffer or benefit of its consequences. In a strange paradox this Venezuelan election might be a unique example on how all will suffer from its consequences, victors and losers alike. To make my point clear I will start first by the moral or psychological meaning of that election. And at the end I will try to speculate on what this election means on more mundane matters, such as what the opposition is supposed to do. The new Venezuelan

The 11 Most Expensive Catastrophes in History
February 21, 2009
[I can't really vouch for the accuracy of these figures nor the piece's author, but the overall message is quite compelling ... and scary! Thanks, M!] # 11. Titanic – $150 Million The sinking of the Titanic is possibly the most famous accident in the world. But it barely makes our list of top 10 most expensive. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage and was considered to be the most luxurious ocean liner ever built. Over 1,500 people lost their lives when the ship ran

National Popular Vote wins in New Mexico house
February 21, 2009
The National Popular Vote plan passed the New Mexico house today by a comfortable 41-27 margin. HB 383, sponsored by Rep. Mimi Stewart, D-Albuquerque, is part of a national effort to ensure that the winner of the popular vote wins the presidency. Once states totaling at least 270 electoral votes enact the legislation, their electoral votes would go to the winner of the national popular vote in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. New Mexico’s house is the 23rd state legislative chamber

Angela Merkel Up For Reelection
February 20, 2009
I was surprised when I first heard the news that Germany elected its first female chancellor in Angela Merkel. She won that historic November 22 election by a razor thin margin in 2005, but so far polls are indicating that she might have an easier time when the German federal elections are held in September. She was already overwhelmingly reelected in December 2008 as the head of the Christian Democratic Party. As the leader of the nation with Europe’s largest economy, Merkel was not o

Dawn of a Newt Age
February 20, 2009
Will Gingrich lead the GOP out of the wilderness? —By David Corn Mother Jones Who’s the big Republican winner emerging from the gop’s decisive defeat in November? It’s not Sarah Palin (future as a presidential contender highly doubtful), Mitt Romney (now a political nonentity), or the party’s point men in Congress (smaller, weaker caucuses). Amid the wreckage, the guy standing tallest in gop-land is a fallen powerbroker whom some had written off as a has-been: Newt Gingrich. Yes, the silver-hai
