Letters From North America by Peary Perry The Bear on Sep 27 2008 | Filed under: Culture I must be weird… Wait, don’t answer that. I already know the answer. Last week I was sitting in the lobby at my dentist. His office has two entrances. If you come in the back door, there is a sign that directs you to the lobby by turning either left or right. I have never given it much thought on which way I should turn. It doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other. Sometimes I go left, someti

THE ANNOTATED OBAMA-McCAIN 1st DEBATE TRANSCRIPT
September 27, 2008
The man who won last night did so by a margin of 52.5%. The identity of that man, not to mention his margin of victory, is, of course, up for debate. So please scroll down to the end of this post & leave your thoughts in the comments section. This post is a work in progress. It will look different later. For now, though here is last night’s debate transcript. Obama’s on the left, McCain’s on the right, & Jim’s in the Center. Following is a transcript of the first presidential debate bet

A Pointless Encounter
September 27, 2008
September 27, 2008 Like most people who watched the debates, I was cheering for a particular candidate. I was hoping to see Obama score points, and cringed when McCain rattled off the names of foreign leaders like the ingredients to a pizza. “The old fart knows a thing or two”, I thought. In other words, I am getting caught up in it. I had to stop myself. Wait a minute, I thought, Russia didn’t invade Georgia – Georgian President Saakashvili attacked South Ossettia, which does not want to be

The Non-Issue Issue
September 27, 2008
It seems that debates are won and lost of late not on the issues — the idea! — but on something meta, beneath the surface of the debate. In 2000, it was Gore sighing when Bush was behaving like an idiot. In 2004, it was Kerry correctly noting that Dick Cheney’s out lesbian daughter was lesbian. These were huge transgressions, far greater than anything actually said about substance, and these were the reasons that the press gave for giving Dubya victories. This has not always cut against the De

Hypocrisy or democracy? Ralph Nader on Russia Today

Independent Ralph Nader is not allowed to debate McCain and Obama because officials say he doesn’t qualify. However, Nader’s influence on the tight election may be greater than he’s being given credit for. more about “Hypocrisy or democracy? Nader on Russ…“, posted with vodpod see

The Home Stretch
September 27, 2008
September 27, 2008 in Journalist Thought, Media, Politics, USA Didn’t see the debate here. It was on way too early. However, this blog has to say it loves this headline appraisal, courtesy of Reuters: McCain and Obama question each other’s judgment It took a head-to-head broadcast exchange to demonstrate that to our friends at Reuters? Have they not noticed the political campaign that has taken place thus far? Political campaigns do, surprisingly, tend to be predicated on candidates que
